“Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent.”
Ouch! As I write this, I am in my early-morning drowsiness and don’t feel very awake. But this is a verse that has been buzzing round my head for a few days and I am still wondering what it means specifically for me.
When Jesus tells us tough things it is ALWAYS for our good and out of love. There have been times when there were aspects of my faith that lay dormant and asleep and God needed to wake me up. But waking up spiritually can take some determination and we need God’s help. I found that, like muscles not used in a long time, my faith had atrophied and I needed exercise again (still a work in progress!).
Lockdown, for some, has been a great time of renewal as they take the opportunity to dig into God’s word. For others, distance from routines of fellowship and teaching has led to weak spiritual muscles. And yes, I feel a bit out of condition some days, too!
Let’s see the hope and love behind these tough words from Jesus, take the encouragement intended and do as He says. Ask God to use Lockdown to aid our walk with Him, not slip into sleepiness.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, thank you that when you say things like this, it is not to condemn but to encourage and stimulate us to love and faithfulness and a closer walk with You. Show me where I am getting spiritually “out of condition” and give me a desire to get “fit” again. Amen.
