Philippians 1
New International Version

12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.

Paul was a man of incredible focus and energy – a truly zealous guy. In prison or free, suffering in body or physically well, in plenty or in need his focus remained the same: preaching Jesus Christ. Paul was also a very compassionate guy who showed great love and concern for the people in the various churches he knew. He encouraged them and told them off, he provided for them and received from them, he did what he thought was best for them.

In these few verses we see the two things coming together. Paul reassures the Philippians that he is well and is glad that his imprisonment is causing more people to talk about Jesus. Paul is a very tough act to follow but we too can imitate his concern for each other and his passion for Jesus when we put God first.

I pray, as Paul prayed, that we might overflow with love for one another and that we grow in spiritual knowledge and insight to the praise and glory of Jesus Christ. Amen
