New International Version
17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
4 :1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!
When I teach people to drive I often have cause to point out the importance of looking in the right place. This is not just to avoid hazards but also to keep on the right course. Scripture also teaches us to pay attention to what we look at and here Paul gives us two places to look. Firstly he mentions good examples. We are to keep our eyes on those who know Jesus is the only way to salvation and live accordingly. We are to keep our eyes on those who desire to know Jesus more and press on toward that goal. Paul also teaches that we should keep our eyes on heaven, that is our home and we are going back there. We need to keep our eyes on the destination and eagerly long for the day when we see Jesus face to face.
Lord I know there are moments that I take my eyes off you, when I get distracted by “earthly things”. Please forgive me in Jesus name. Holy Spirit give me eyes to see you at work, draw me to mentors and people who are good examples to follow. Stir in me a deeper hunger to live in God’s presence and to know you more. Amen
